Workshop on Evidence-Based Practices in Higher Education

Workshop Summary:

We usually teach according to a combination of our experience and our intuition. However, learning demonstrably improves when teaching is informed by evidence on the most effective practices. The body of evidence about the most effective practices in university science education has become both large and compelling. I will summarize the evidence and discuss both the barriers and the pathways to making changes in our teaching.

Workshop Length:

I usually do this as a 50-minute workshop with time for 10 minutes of questions in a typical 1-hour slot, but allowing 90 minutes, when available, gives more time for both evidence and questions. Alternatively, this workshop can serve as a starting point for a more extended, practice-based morning or afternoon that proceeds from a discussion of the evidence to having participants think specifically about redesign possibilities for their own courses.
